 You have your new passport for the next ten years; We are sure that you want your passport photo to look at its best! Nobody wants a photo that looks older than they are, sick or unhappy. And did you know that you can now also take your own passportphoto?     

What to wear and what not to wear!

The first thing to consider is your wardrobe. Please note that the passport photo only shows your head and shoulders. It doesn't matter what you wear below your waist, but the area around your neck will be visible in the photo. When you renew your passport, do not wear the clothes that you were wearing in your last passport photo. If your new photo looks too similar to the old one, it may be rejected as the passport agency cannot confirm that it was taken in the last six months.       

  

Dos and don'ts for clothes

DO NOT wear glasses! Your photo may be rejected and your application on hold if you submit a photo with glasses. Especially when your glasses are blinded on the lenses. Do not wear anything on your head, such as hats, headbands, or scarves. If you wear religious headgear on a daily basis, you can wear it on your passport photo as long as your face is clearly visible. You'll also need to send a letter explaining your religious hat. DO NOT wear a uniform. Photos showing you in uniform will be rejected by the passport agency.  You MUST choose business attire or a collared shirt for your passport photos. This is not a State Department rule. They don't care if you wear a sloppy sweatshirt or a suit and tie. However, if you ever have to show your passport for a business visa or have to show it to a new employer as part of your records when you are hired, you will be very happy that your passport photo enhances your professional image.    

Wear a shirt or dress with a neckline high enough to show through in the final image. "I've seen too many passport photos on which the traveler wore a tank top or a wide V-neck shirt," says our model friend, "and when it's cut out and printed in the passport book, it looks like it is naked." ! " Again, this is not an official rule, but it could save you some embarrassing moments at the airport!      

Use a color other than black or white. Your photo has a plain white background, so a colored shirt will keep your photo from looking washed out. Is there one color that always gets compliments when you wear it? Use it for your passport photo!      


Take a pose

Finally, practice your pose before contacting the photographer. Your passport photo should show that you are looking forward with a neutral expression, but that doesn't mean you have to look somber . Sit up straight and roll your shoulders back to elongate the look of your neck. While you can't smile far or show your teeth, you can channel Tyra Banks and "smile" - smile with your eyes! Many people also worry about photos having double chins in photos, which is a common occurrence when you tilt your chin down. Don't be tempted to lift your chin to correct this. This will only expose more area under the jaw and make it bigger. Instead, slide your chin forward about an inch as if you were a turtle sticking its head out of its shell. It will feel uncomfortable and unnatural, but it will make the jaw line look solid in the photo.                  

Make sure you are happy with your passport photo

Do not accept photos with poor lighting (such as overexposure or facial shadows), poor print quality, or an unnatural color cast. If you pay for a passport photo, you should get one that is definitely acceptable to the State Department and you!
