 Latch Hook Kits

For some, when they think of crochet, they immediately imagine the 1970s, but this rug-making technique has been around for a hundred years and has never really gone away. In the 21st century, the interlocking hook is modern, colorful, and often much more abstract than the crochet clown kits of times past. It's a great way to use partial skeins of yarn, and you can turn your work into wall hangings, pillows, rugs, and more!

1- Use leftover yarn to make a rainbow

Crossandstitch from Hands Occupied literally wrote the book on the Modern Locking Hook (coming soon from Leisure Arts) and with lots of basic tutorials she's also sharing a few fun projects. A good place to start is his rainbow wall hanging project. Rather than creating a traditional rainbow shape with a pattern to follow, you can work a range of yarn scraps on the canvas to create a modern abstract set of mini wall art!

2- Hang a gingham rug

The interlocking hook operates on a grid, which makes gingham a perfectly easy to follow pattern. And it's so cute! Allison from Dream a Little Bigger walks you through the process from start to finish, and when you're done, you'll have a fun mat you want to sink your toes into.

3- Let yourself be guided by a modern kit

When trying out a new craft, it often helps to start with a kit. This simple and charming kit includes the canvas, velvety yarn, lock hook tool, template, and instructions so you can make a flat but soft pillow or wall hanging. You can get started right away!

4- Locking hook a dimensional wall hanger

This simple wall hanging has a defined vintage vibe. It's also a simple project that lets you play around with color, shape, and dimension. You can see  latch hook kits how much of a difference cutting the wire really makes when it comes to the look of your finished piece. And while this free tutorial only shows you how to make a square crochet hook, you'll see other versions for inspiration in the article.

5- Make a modern crochet rainbow

Rainbows were a frequent subject in lock hook kits of yore, but this DIY Studio project is bright, fresh, and exactly what you would like to see hung in your child's room. The method of hanging your lock hook on a wooden rod is also a great technique that you may want to use in other lock hook projects!

6- Create a colorful cushion cover with thread

Use the free-form interlocking hook to create a cuddly pillow that will make a bold statement on your sofa! One of the smartest tips you will learn from this tutorial is the unique way Cintia from My Poppet assembles the pillowcase. She works several strands of different yarns together for an amazing texture that you will want to replicate.

7- Latch Hook Trendy Leaves

There are plenty of places to buy Vervaco latch hook kits, and they come in many styles, from traditional to modern, but we think you'll love this trendy monstera leaf rug kit. This premium kit includes a hand painted canvas to work on and includes everything you need

8- Lock on some wire pastels

Karen Barbé is best known for her embroidery, but when she dipped her toe into the crochet hook, the result was as wonderful as her other needlework. This mosaic-shaped design doesn't include any instructions for the lock hook, but by learning the basics from other tutorials on this list, Karen's free pattern will be all you need to get started.

9- Let a Ouija decide what to lock the hook

Should I start a new lock hook project? Yes? No? Maybe that is the answer to your question and it comes in the form of this fun template. You can purchase the model digitally, as a physical model, or as a  kit (bring your own thread). Plus, you'll find more non-traditional designs in this fiber art shop!

10- Locking hook a Popsicle

The locking hook doesn't always have to be a standard shape, as another project from Hands Occupied shows. And what could be more fun than a giant frozen ice cream made with a locking hook? Heidi Gustaf walks you through the process in this article, as well as some steps to finishing a shape like this in other articles.
